The National Health Insurance program (NHI) began in the year 2000. It is a program aimed at improving primary healthcare. Universal access to primary healthcare is fundamental in a health system. In Belize, the National Health Insurance seeks to improve quality healthcare, accessibility to healthcare, and be part of an efficient and sustainable health system. During these years of existence, the NHI has seen that the best model to provide this service is through the mixed model where public, private, and non-governmental organizations provide healthcare services.
As part of this initiative, Northern Medical Plaza has joined the team of polyclinics in the country to provide primary healthcare. Patients from the surrounding villages, such as Copper Bank, Progresso, Sarteneja, and Little Belize, can access it with a social security card.
